Amazon opens its $1.5 billion air hub in Kentucky in latest push to speed deliveries

Amazon on Wednesday opened its $1.5 billion air hub in northern Kentucky, which will help accelerate its push for faster delivery and greater control over its logistics network.

It’s a major milestone for Amazon Air, the company’s burgeoning air cargo arm, which launched in 2016, whose routes are flown by several contracted carriers. Across the company’s sprawling network of warehouses, trucks and delivery vans, planes remain a critical piece of the puzzle in ensuring packages can be handed off quickly to customers’ doorsteps.

Amazon Air operates out of more than 40 airports across the U.S., but the terminal at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport will serve as the central nerve of its nationwide cargo network, allowing it to supercharge its one- and, increasingly, same-day delivery capabilities in more areas of the country. Amazon has also expanded its aviation logistics unit beyond the U.S., opening a 20,000-square-meter regional air hub at Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany last November.

The Kentucky hub, which is just a short drive from Cincinnati, Ohio, has been in development for more than four years. Amazon founder and executive chairman Jeff Bezos, then CEO, broke ground on the project in 2019 by hopping into a John Deere front loader to “move some earth.”

At the time, Bezos remarked, “This hub is going to let us get packages to customers faster. That’s a big deal.”

The hub spans a campus of over 600 acres, which includes a ramp for aircraft parking, a multi-level parking structure and seven buildings, such as an 800,000-square-foot robotic sort center, where packages are sorted by zip code and consolidated into trucks before delivery.

Analysts have eagerly awaited the launch of the hub for its potential to significantly speed deliveries and help Amazon catch up to carriers such as UPS and FedEx. A report issued last fall by DePaul University’s Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development described the hub as the “lynchpin to Amazon’s efforts to develop a comprehensive array of domestic delivery services across the United States.”

It’s designed to have capacity for 100 Amazon-branded planes and handle an estimated 200 flights per day, telegraphing Amazon’s ambitions to bring more of its air cargo operations in house. Investors have questioned whether Amazon will offer its air cargo services to other companies as a way to generate new revenue streams.

But for now, Sarah Rhoads, vice president of Amazon Global Air, said the company is focused on handling its own package volume.

“Right now, we’re focused on our customers for sure,” Rhoads said in an interview with CNBC. “We built the hub in Cincinnati to serve our Amazon customers, there’s really no other purpose than that.”

Amazon Air now has more than 75 aircraft in the network and the company expects to have more than 80 planes in its network at this time next year and 85, both leased and owned, by the end of 2022.

Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings and Air Transport Services Group are among Amazon Air’s operators. Last year, low-cost leisure passenger airline Sun Country began flying converted Boeing 737s for Amazon, a welcome revenue source during the depths of the pandemic when many travelers stayed home.

In January, Amazon acquired 11 used Boeing 767-300 jets from Delta and WestJet, its first-ever outright aircraft purchase as prices for planes fell in the pandemic.

“We’re learning a lot as a company through this process of owning and working through the conversion of aircraft,” Rhoads said. “A lot of it comes down to availability of feedstock and what makes the most sense for our network and our customers as well.”

When asked whether Amazon would expand the number of airlines that fly its air network, or own an airline outright, Rhoads said that the company is focused on the current partners and model.

“We are becoming a fairly big network and we’re happy with the service that we’re getting right now,” she said.

Vanessa Bryant has settled a lawsuit filed against her by her mother

Vanessa Bryant has settled a lawsuit filed against her by her mother, Sofia Urbieta Laine. Terms of the settlement are not released. Laine filed a notice of unconditional settlement Wednesday in Orange County Superior Court, indicating that a request for dismissal would be filed within 45 days.

The family feud started after Sofia Urbieta Laine sued her 38-year-old daughter for financial support, alleging that she worked for years as an unpaid personal assistant and nanny to the couple and that Kobe had promised to take care of her but Vanessa void all his promises, alleges the 48-page lawsuit.

Vanessa in her statement wrote that her 68-year-old mother is trying to extort a financial windfall from our family in the wake of her husband Kobe Bryant's death. She and her husband of 20 years had supported her mother financially, allowing her to live in one of their properties near their Newport Coast home free of charge. She now wants to back charge me $96 per hour for supposedly working 12 hours a day for 18 years for watching her grandchildren. In reality, she only occasionally babysat my older girls when they were toddlers. She was a stay-at-home mom.

Earlier this year, I was looking for a new home for her and, a week later, she went on television and gave an interview disparaging our family and making false accusations while living rent-free in a gated apartment complex in Newport Coast,” she said.

In that interview with Univision, Sofia Laine alleged she was forced out of her home by her daughter and was made to return a luxury car. “She told me, ‘I need you to get out of the house,’” Laine said on “El Gordo y la Flaca.” Bryant said the interview was “beyond hurtful.”

“Even after that betrayal, I was willing to provide my mother with monthly support for the rest of her life, and that wasn’t good enough. She, instead, contacted me through intermediaries — contrary to what she claims, my phone number hasn’t changed — and demanded $5 million, a house and a Mercedes SUV.”

Vanessa Bryant inherited control of an estate valued at as much as $600 million after Kobe Bryant’s death, according to financial experts.

She said she won’t give into the “false and absurd claims” and demands.“She has no regard for how this is affecting my children and me. She wants to live off her for the rest of her life while still collecting alimony from a 2004 divorce.  My husband and I have never discouraged or kept her from providing for herself. My husband never promised my mother anything, and he would be so disappointed in her behavior and lack of empathy,” she said in her statement.

How much does Jamie Spears make from Britney Spears’ conservatorship?

According to Forbes, Jamie has made at least $5 million from Britney’s conservatorship. Per court documents reviewed by Forbes, Britney has had to pay her father $16,000 per month since February 2009 as her conservator. In 12 years, that amount has equaled to $2.4 million.

In legal documents filed in August 2021, Britney’s lawyer, Mathew Rosengart, claimed that Jamie spent more than $1.3 million in attorney fees from October 2020 to June 2021. He also alleged that Jamie asked for $541,000 in the past year for “media matters” as Britney’s conservator. “There has been an evident dissipation of assets of Ms. Spears Estate, and that dissipation is ongoing,” he said.

Per a 2021 report by The New York Times, Jamie has also received a cut of Britney’s touring revenues. The newspaper reported that Jamie received 1.5 percent of gross ticket and merchandise sales from Britney’s Piece of Me Las Vegas residency, which ran from 2013 to 2017. The show grossed $137.7 million, according to Caesars Entertainment, which left Jamie with a cut of $2.1 million. The New York Times also reports that Jamie received a 2.95 percent commission from Britney’s 2011 Femme Fatale tour, which would have made him at least $500,000.

Along with her court-ordered salary to her father, Britney has had to pay for Jamie’s $2,000-per-month office, which has cost her almost $300,000 in 12 years. Britney has also had to pay an estimated millions of dollars in legal fees for both her attorney and Jamie’s. According to Forbes, court records from 2018 to 2019 reveal that Jamie’s law firm at the time, Freeman, Freeman and Smiley, charged Britney $170,000 for her father’s legal fees. From 2016 to 2018, Britney’s former attorney, Samuel D. Ingham III, was paid $331,940.50 for 698.7 hours of work at $475 per hour while representing her.

According to a 2018 filing by Jamie’s attorney, Britney’s conservators claimed that her “estate was nearly out of funds and cash equivalents” when her conservatorship was created in 2008. The documents state that, between 2014 and 2018, Britney’s estate increased in value by $20 million as a result of her conservators’ management of her assets. “The problems were of epic proportions over a period of years,” the filing reads, according to Forbes. “Extraordinary skills have been employed by all in order to achieve the results enjoyed at the present time. [The conservator, Jamie Spears] has had many months at a time where all of his professional time was spent in services rendered exclusively to the conservatee.”

At her court hearing in 2021, Britney slammed the California court system for allowing her father to make so much money off of her. “It makes no sense whatsoever for the state of California to sit back and literally watch me, with their own two eyes, make a living for so many people and pay so many people, trucks and buses on tour, on the road with me, and be told I’m not good enough,” she said. “It’s been a long time since I’ve owned my money, and it’s my wish and my dream for all of this to end.”

LONDON: Muhammad Iqbal, a multi-millionaire from the United Kingdom, has become a member of the Azad Kashmir Legislative Assembly on the seat reserved for overseas Kashmiris.

The businessman — commonly known as Mo Iqbal — from Stoke-on-Trent was able to become the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for AJK with Prime Minister Imran Khan's support.

The premier and Iqbal have known each other for several years and the businessman not only manages PTI’s finances in the UK, but he has also led PTI's Finance Board for the UK and some other chapters for over a decade.

Iqbal’s role included maintaining paid memberships, keeping finances in control, filing annual accounts and compliance, verifications, and organising annual elections of the paid members.

The newly-elected member, whose parents had migrated from AJK to Britain decades ago, is the chairman of an online tile retailer "Tile Mountain" which is based in Stoke-on-Trent.

At the firm, he employs more than 300 people and his annual turnover is estimated to be over £60 million.

Mo Iqbal’s rise to becoming a multi-millionaire is a rags-to-riches story.  He started working at the age of 17, sweeping floors at Topps Tiles, where he became the manager later on.

After gaining a few years of experience, he, along with two work colleagues, set up the Tile Mountain company where he serves as the chairman today. Tile Mountain is one of the largest privately-owned tile retailers of its kind in the UK.

In 2017, Iqbal relocated his business to a new £10 million purpose-built 120,000 square-foot headquarters and his staff strength grew from around two dozen to over 300 today.

Following his victory, PTI Information Secretary UK Jabar Farooq Chohan said: “Congratulations on behalf of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf UK on the election of Muhammad Iqbal as MLA in Azad Kashmir Assembly."

"Muhammad Iqbal is a long-time associate of the PTI UK and has been serving as a member of PTI UK and sponsoring the Finance Board for many years. PTI UK is the largest overseas chapter of PTI with the highest annual membership in all overseas regions. We are proud that Prime Minister Imran Khan expressed confidence in a long-serving PTI UK activist.”

ISLAMABAD: The newly-elected Azad Kashmir Prime Minister Sardar Abdul Qayyum Niazi’s son Zarar Qayyum is the Labour Party’s councillor for the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham.

Councillor Zarar Qayyum stood on the Labour party’s ticket for the ward of West End and won against his Tory rival.

He was with his father yesterday in the Azad Kashmir assembly as he took oath as the Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir. Sardar Niazi's name was endorsed by Prime Minister Imran Khan.

New AJK Prime Minister’s son is Labour partys councillor for London

Zarar Qayyum is Labour’s chief whip in the council and he has campaigned for equality, human rights, and free meals. He is also a member of London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s Employment and Skills Committee. Other than his political activities, the councillor runs a consultancy firm that delivers government contracts.

New AJK Prime Minister’s son is Labour partys councillor for London

Zarar Qayyum, who is currently in Azad Kashmir campaigning for his father’s election, told Geo.tv over the phone his father will devote himself to serving the people of Azad Kashmir and will do his best to live up to the expectations of Prime Minister Imran Khan.

“We are thankful to the Almighty that Qayyum Niazi has been given a chance to serve the people of Azad Kashmir. This was part of his election manifesto that if elected, he will do everything possible to create jobs and opportunities for the people of Kashmir. My father ran on the agenda of positive hope and he is resolute to deliver,” Zarar Qayyum said.

The Labour councillor added that the new PM of Azad Kashmir will work towards highlighting the case of Kashmiris for their rights and will use his previous political experience to mount a robust campaign within Pakistan, Azad Kashmir, and overseas.

“My father has spent all his life in politics. He has been elected because the voters have trust in him and he has always served the local people whether in the assembly or not.”

The news of Niazi’s nomination as the new PM of Azad Kashmir was announced by the Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Hussain Chaudhry on Twitter.

“After a long consultation and review of suggestions, the Prime Minister of Pakistan and Chairman PTI Imran Khan has nominated the newly-elected MLA Abdul Qayyum Niazi for the post of Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir,” he wrote.

The minister also termed Abdul Qayyum as "a dynamic and genuine political activist, dedicated to his workers".

Abdul Qayyum Niazi was previously part of the All Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Conference (AJKMC) before leaving it to join the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) two years ago. He has been elected from the LA-18 Poonch-1 constituency of AJK.

He was also elected to the assembly from the platform of the Muslim Conference in 2006 and has also served as the minister of food.

The premier interviewed a total of five candidates for the post of prime minister of AJK, including Sardar Tanveer Ilyas, Barrister Sultan Mahmood, Khawaja Farooq, Azhar Sadiq, and Abdul Qayyum Niazi.

Like Zarar Qayyum, hundreds of other British Kashmiris travelled to Azad Kashmir to take part in elections.
